I think I'd go mad if I didn't have a place to escape to. Luxury will be always around, no matter what happens in the world. I have a fantastic relationship with money. I use it to buy my freedom. Everything I do is a matter of heart, body and soul. Awkwardness gives me great comfort. I've never been cool, but I've felt cool. I've been in the cool place, but I wasn't really cool - I was trying to pass for hip or cool. It's the awkwardness that's nice. I believe in comfort. If you don't feel comfortable in your clothes, it's hard to think of anything else. Grunge is a hippied romantic version of punk. Attitude is everything. I've treated the waistcoat as if it were a corset, so that it becomes the first layer in the process of putting clothes on the body. There is constant motion between layering and revealing. Over the years I have learned that what is important in a dress is the woman who is wearing it.

Design is a series of creative choices - it's a collaborative effort, an evolutionary process. You choose your fabrics depending upon what you want to say, then you work with mills to get those fabrics. Through the process, you realize what you want it to be. You're only as good as your last collection, which is an enormous pressure. I'm a fashion designer and people think, what do I know? When I was young, I lived like an old woman, and when I got old, I had to live like a young person. There are only three things I can do - make a dress, decorate a house, and entertain people. I like them to feel comfortable.
